Final year project presentations

Afstudeervoordrachten Railbouwkunde / Final year project presentations
On Thursday, 23 February 2006 two presentations of the final year projects will be held in the Room 2.52 (CT Building). The first presentation will start at 10:30.
Presentation 1:
Numerical simulations of the dynamic wheel-rail response at rail weld irregularities
by Jorge Rivero Granero, Universitat Politecnica de Catalonia, (Erasmus grant)
Rail weld surface irregularities lead to dynamic amplification of wheel-rail contact forces and stresses. Worldwide, current standards for rail weld geometry are based on the principle of maximum vertical tolerances. In this approach, the geometrical shape of the weld has no significance. Therefore, a new geometrical parameter (the rail weld QI) has been introduced recently by TU Delft, in order to include the geometrical shape of the welds and the corresponding wheel-rail forces in the assessment. In the present research a numerical model has been developed to simulate the dynamic response of the wheel-rail system (in terms of dynamic contact forces, wheel displacements, dynamic rail deflections, dynamic rail bending moments, etc) to rail welds, and to investigate the relation with the geometrical quality of the interface wheel-rail in terms of maximum vertical tolerances and the QI.
Presentation 2:
Influence of welds quality on track deterioration and Life Cycle Cost
by Daniel Veiga Vieira, Instituto Superior Tecnico (Lisboa), (Erasmus grant)
This research focuses on the influence rail welds quality on the deterioration of the track. The weld quality is estimated by the Quality Index using the methodology proposed by TU Delft. The track deterioration model used here is based on the model proposed in the D161 research of ERRI. Using this model it is possible to obtain a relative estimation of the track deterioration w. r. t. a reference situation. By improving the quality of welds reduction of track deterioration can be achieved, which can be calculated using the developed model. Based on the track deterioration reduction it is possible to predict the reduction of the maintenance costs on a railway network and to determinate the possible amount of money that could be invested in the network improvement, more specifically in weld geometry improvement.
All members of the Section of Road and Railway Engineering are welcome to attend the presentations. For (MSc and PhD) students of Railway Engineering the attendance of these presentations is compulsory.
